How to rug your horse based on temperature

As the warmer months approach, it’s essential to keep our horses comfortable with the right rugging. Here’s a helpful guide on how to rug your horse based on temperature:

1. Above 15°C
In warmer weather, a lightweight, breathable rug or no rug at all is often the best choice to prevent overheating.

2. 10°C – 15°C
For cooler days, a light to medium-weight rug offers just the right amount of comfort, especially if it’s breezy or rainy.

3. 5°C – 10°C
A medium-weight rug is ideal for these temperatures, providing warmth without overheating, even as the day warms up.

4. Below 5°C
When temperatures drop below 5°C, a heavier rug becomes necessary, particularly for horses with a thinner coat or those that have been clipped.

5. Regular Rug Checks
Always keep an eye on your horse’s comfort levels. If they seem too warm, be sure to remove or switch to a lighter rug.

By following these simple tips, you can ensure your horse stays comfortable throughout the warmer season. Let’s all enjoy a great summer of riding!
